Sound-Installation dealing with screaming, speech and voice as a fundamental part of subjectification, of expression, of interruption, of disruption in the context of a history of medicalizing and categorizing women’s voices and related behaviour as sick, deviant and to be in need of treatment.
According to S. Freud (yes, the psychoanalysis guy), loss of voice, interruptions of speech or incoherent speech have been major symptoms of so-called hysteria.

In the context of the installation the screaming can be regarded as a über-über-exaggeration of incoherent voices and speech, the most you can get out of your voice in form of a ‘screamo choir’.
At the same time a comment on categorizing screaming/loud women as mad – hysterical – weird, with reference to the medical and psycho-medical discourse during the last two centuries. What was called ‘hysteria’ until the middle of the 20th century is now called ‘Somatoform Disorders’ or ‘Dissociative Disorder’, covering so-called symptoms of hysteria (as defined by early Freud) under the disguise of ‘modern’ terms.
By enhancing voice into screaming, this might be an attempt to appropriate and to undermine symptoms into reversed treatment in public space.

Set up:
Two stereo speakers play pre-recorded screaming (10 samples) for which women have been invited to scream in the entrance hall of Valand, School of Fine Arts, Göteborg/Sweden. The space gave a natural echo which increased the intensitiy of the screaming.
One mono speaker (‘leslie’ horn) is playing voice recordings (10 samples): sentences that all relate to speech and voicete, taken out from the ‘studies on hysteria’ by freud/breuer but turned into a first person narrative (I, the women’s perspective not freud’s) with a double, more silent, sound layer of a third narrative (She).
Max/ Msp patch to control and play the audio files.
